Right To Rent

Changes to the immigration Act made on the 1 December 2016 resulted in landlords requiring to carry out right to rent immigration checks on their tenants. The purpose of the checks is to confirm the eligibility of the tenant to; live in the UK, the checks form part of the governments reform to build a fairer & effective immigration system.

Landlords are required to check the immigration status of a tenant 28 days prior to the commencement of the tenancy.

Tenants must provide their original documents that prove their right to live in the UK, these include:

  • British passport
  • EU passport or national identity card
  • A foreign non-EU passport showing indefinite leave to the UK or a residence permit card.
